Nicky Haley arguably would have been a better non-racist candidate.
But I think it is still too simplistic to say his party chose him *because* he's racist. I think there are many of other reasons they wanted to choose him, rightly or wrongly.
On some things, such as whether a woman has the right to decide what happens in her own body, there is deep disagreement. Others are made up (no-one wants to defund the police).
But the question stands: why not non-racist MAGA? Ted Cruz isn’t a champion of trans rights, and Marco Rubio doesn’t want women to make their own health decisions. But the party chose the racist who talks about legal immigrants from Haiti in horribly racist tropes.
You still seem to be implying that all his supporters are at least sympathetic or willing to accept his racism.
From all the stuff I have seen and heard from a number of his supporters, there seem to be some at least legitimate concerns:
Unfettered illegal entry by millions of people from the southern border and the related impact this has on communities
Reacting against 'woke' agendas, with perceptions that their children are being forced into gender politics at too young an age; defunding police that disproportionately negatively impacts the safety of the poorest neighbourhoods; people deelims tangibly poorer than during Trump's presidency; a sense of alienation from 'the establishment' who they feel don't understand them
And a number of other areas that I've heard, beyond the frothing right wing idiots that are undoubtedly also part of Trump's base.
And I haven't even gone into many Jewish voters who have felt increasingly unsafe following the Gaza/Israel events
racist? Because by any definition, his words and actions over a lifetime show that he is; and this doesn’t seem to be a dealbreaker for his supporters. Does voting for a racist not imply a certain support for racism? They could have voted for Ted Cruz or Marco Rubio or Jeb Bush in 2016 or Haley this time, but no, they want the racist birther version of MAGA.
It is of course understandable how you feel.
But leaving that aside, I don't seem to find it too hard to at least empathise why people may want to vote for Trump (beyond them all being seen as racists and idiots) . The attitude of being appalled at and ridiculing Trump supporters is also in part why there is such a highly charged and polarised election.
There are plenty of reasons why Kamala can be viewed as a terrible candidate (most Dem voters would agree to this themselves six months ago).
Let's say for the sake of argument but what you say about Harris is true - she laughs a lot and lack substance. Then compare what we know about Trump, that he lies continually, is racist and misogynist, admires dictators from Hitler to Putin, encouraged his supporters to overthrow the constitution and is threatening to use the army against his opponents.
Apparently you (and Sonoma Blue) don't seem to see this as a problem compared to 'laughing Kamala'. But the no substance stuff is nonsense. Whatever criticisms one might have of the limitations her (extensive) policy programme, she is an extremely intelligent and able woman who demolished Trump in the debate without breaking sweat.
Biden seems to have had a lot more substance but he is past it now
Genuinely interested in what sort of US Trump voters want to see.
