trump himself is mostly irrelevant. it's a bit like the brexit vote in the uk - people were sick to death of austerity and tories, and were given a stick to beat someone/something else (i.e. the eu). it didn't really matter what was being voted on. he's basically a blank slate to project onto at this point, and people are happy to do just that.
in trump's case, the ones to worry about are the smart ones driving the campaign behind him who have particular targets that are anathema to anyone remotely left-leaning. and people are being told that they mean to target those *other* people, not them. throw in that kamala is both black and female and you've gained the misogynstic and/or racist vote, too.
anyone sane and rational would vote for the candidate who isn't a convicted felon and who hasn't already tried to overthrow the country once before. the fact that it's close is pretty scary from this side of the pond, tbh, but then we did brexit and voted tory for far too long ourselves. sadly, politics is too much about personal identity politics, and less about what's actually beneficial for the population. we're all turkeys voting for christmas at the end of the day.
