You're right that I'm a huge fan of Neil Hannon, and I think that Our Mutual Friend is possibly the best song he's ever written (although my favourite is probably Don't Look Down...or maybe Tonight We Fly - certainly when performed live anyway) among a lot of strong competition.
I think he's an absolute genius, both with his music and the wit and cleverness of his lyrics - and if you'd only just realised the double meaning of the "it's not unusual" line then might I guess that you maybe haven't picked up the relevance of the line "a song that I can't sing anymore" either? If not then listen to Our Mutual Friend from 02:28, then listen to the song below from 0:40 (Neil is a huge fan of Scott Walker!)
