Has anyone ever done any sort of analysis on this, i.e. how have we actually started in the league in comparison to our pre-season results/opposition? Genuinely curious.

Last few seasons may be a bad example given what a basket case we've been but IIRC we've had some awful preseasons under Moyes and came out flying once the league kicked off.
