A lot of fouls are subjective so we have a lot of flexibility
The problem with footy fans is that they don't want consistency from refs, they want every decision to go in their favour
"That's a pen, ref"
"So, you'd be happy for that to be awarded against you"
We have the laws of the game and then we have referees deciding that they’re only going to apply them sometimes. Isn’t that what creates the inconsistency?
I fully agree it’s harsh to give a penalty for that but it’s harsh when someone’s offside by a toenail, as well.
when I'm refereeing players will quite often say to me that I'd give a foul if it wasn't in the penalty area - but it is in the area and rather than a non dangerous free kick on the half way line it now results in 80% chance of a goal if I award a pen
There's an unwritten rule among refs that if a player gets his shot away and is then fouled its not a penalty as the challenge has not impacted the outcome - remember Sigurdsson v Man Utd in the last home game before lock down - he was cleaned out after getting his shot away and was adjudged to then be offside when still feeling the effects of the challenge
Unfortunately after last night it will make it more difficult for us grassroots refs
...when the outcome is a penalty in a high-stakes match.
One of those you'd definitely be irritated to have it against you.
But, Koeman/Platt, red Christmas Trees, etc so I'm fine with it :D
thought it was a penalty. But as soon as I saw Kane lying in agony, I knew he was “waiting” for VAR to check for it. I’m sorry to say, but I think Kane is a diver and has been for a long time.
For me it’s not clear and obvious and that’s a shame when it’s a semifinal.
My guess is, if Spain gets a penalty like that in the final, Southgate would feel robbed.
The handball penalties are annoying as well, by the way.
