... we were playing Southampton away. Southampton would stay up if they won. The way that other results went that day, the Southampton would've stayed up even if they'd lost, but the situation before the game was they needed to win to be sure of staying in the Premier. Bearing in mind that the previous season, our plight was helped by Vialli's Chelsea playing a full-strength side even though they had a European final the following week, and they helped us out immensely by winning that game when they could have taken it easy. Vialli said that he did what he did for the integrity of the competition. Fast forward twelve months, and we just didn't bother against Southampton. We phoned it in. No obvious consideration for the other teams threatened with relegation, in the way that Vialli had done for us.
No wonder Olivier Dacourt left us that close season. The reality of Everton that season couldn't have been what Peter Johnson & co had promised him (and Walter) when he signed for us the previous Summer.
