Sorry. Should have read before! But I think what is clearly needed is an automated system that is consistent in all matches. So it’s not one VAR’s opinion. Hopefully we’ll get that. Like in tennis or cricket (though people have started to argue about ball tracking in Cricket now!)
And then it’s instant. Like Goal Line technology. You know immediately.
Btw, I have all sorts of issues with VAR. But solving offside decisions seems one of the easier issues to solve with tech. There’s arguments about which part of the body constitutes being off side - I’d just go with feet, none of this armpit business. But if it is consistent and automated and instant, it should solve a lot.
Of course then you get into ‘interfering with play’ which is another can of worms, but that was the case before VAR.
I guess you can debate, whether or not a toe or whatever constitutes offside or not - I thought he was off as soon as I saw the replay btw. But in the past, rightly or wrongly a flag would have gone up or wouldn’t and every can get on with celebrating or being devastated.
Having minutes of everyone celebrating and then it being called off is unacceptable. And it’s ruining goals, because you can never quite enjoy them.
With offside, hopefully, this new semi auto thing will solve this, because ‘the flag’ will go up instantly as it used to so you don’t have a crowd going nuts only to have it ruled out a minute later.
God knows how you solve the issue of VARS finding some minor foul three passes before the goal though.
