Of course, it could mean players who should move stay as squad players for their whole careers…
So yes, you'd have maybe five players who get most of their income from other sources.
But it works for other sports. NBA has some of the biggest commercial deals for players in the world but that hasn't stopped it being competitve.
Funnily enough I have been thinking exactly the same cap as Col, 200 million. It would mean the big clubs would still have an advantage over the rest but it wouldn't be as ridiculous as now.
Could some sort of rebate on club's youth products also work? I.e. if he has been at the club since 15 his wages only count half towards the cap? It could have some negative implications but big clubs are already signing players that young.
Don't most top sports stars earn about 10-15% as wages, and the rest comes via other sources?
Liverpools wages hit 370mil last season according to their recent accounts (was 210 just 6 years ago)
God knows what Uniteds and Citys are
Lutons is probably 50mil
Let clubs spend a max of 200mil on wages
but it would need to be UEFA wide
Or something about squad size / signing loads and loaning players - I know they are tightening it up, but not enough.
Also balance out the tv money more - but they are going the opposite way sadly
