if it was within that 7 day term, then you raised it, they disputed, and any delay was down to resolving said dispute not in your notifying of damage.
outside that, you'll probably have to spead to someone like the citizen's advice lot or something to figure it out. i suspect they'll say you give them a chance to rectify or you'll go to small claims court to have it settled in there.
