Tactically they are now more "box to box" than any other position and more likely to be travelling at speed when tackled as opposed to more central players who barely have time to turn before being challenged (hence the other modern propensity to just hold the ball in and fall over...I'm looking at you Mr Kane)

Its telling he's now also 2nd choice for Scotland behind Brentford's Hickey. Who has taken his chance and been great in the last few games for Scotland.

Those two plus Keiran Tierney on the other side for Scotland are not complete defenders (yet) but similar to most modern full backs. The priority is getting forward, getting crosses in and attacking, which they all do well.

Is it just me or is there a lot of the early defender Gareth Bale about him?

not great positional sense and relies completely on his pace. First instinct is to get forward and attack with good close control and a decent shot.

If he ends up a right back it'd be such a waste I reckon
