In his twelve seasons with Everton, Meagan was not always first choice either in midfield or at full back. In the championship-winning side of 1962-63, however, he was almost a regular, playing at both right and left back.

Based on the white-shirted opponent in the OS photo and the games in which all four blues played together (thanks evertonresults.com), I think the match was on the last day of the 1962-63 season. Roy Vernon scored a hat-trick in a 4-1 win against Fulham.

The line-up that day was Dunlop, Parker, Meagan, Gabriel, Labone, Kay, Scott, Stevens, Young, Vernon, Temple

Fulham's team included luminaries such as George Cohen, Alan Mullery, Bobby Robson, and Johnny Haynes.

As a student at King's College, London, I couldn't go to that match; however, I did see the famous 1-0 victory over Spurs while home for Easter. I was also at Upton Park for the nail-biting 2-1 win against West Ham in late April. The Hammers took the lead in that match thank to an own goal by . . . Meagan.

Goals by Vernon and Temple secured the win, though in the closing minutes I recall seeing Blues' defenders wellying the ball upfield. It resembled kicking for touch in Rugby Union: not School of Science, but effective nonetheless.
