It's all well and good moaning about the lack of firepower, but if no one who fits the bill is available, or wants to come, then I think it's good that we've still done business elsewhere, rather than wait for the golden goose and be left high and dry on deadline day.
Far too often in the past we've put all of our eggs in a single basket, only to be ####ed over last minute and realise we're actually 5 players short, not just the one we've been ogling for weeks
...we lost Richarlison 6 weeks ago and that should have been sorted out well before now.
We've effectively handed 6 points away because that wasn't addressed promptly. Yes, Calvert-Lewin had a freak accident in training, but it wouldn't have exactly been a bolt from the blue to see him break down again.
That's been poor from the club. Very poor.
Obviously still a work in progress, but so far I think it's to be applauded.
Tarkowski and Coady are exactly what we needed at the back and we'll benefit greatly from their presence, as will the younger centre halves at the club.
Vinagre is a decent if unspectacular addition and good cover / competition for Mykolenko. He's also pretty rapid and probably a little more attack-minded than Mykolenko, so a good alternative when we need to get at teams.
Onana is highly rated and will give us drive, energy and presence in the middle of the park. Essentially he's a younger version of the player that Doucoure should have been for us. Only young though, so may need time to settle properly.
McNeil - is being hung out to dry currently by some, but he's decent and once we're able to field a settled, balanced team which actually contains strikers/attackers, McNeil will have every chance to come into his own. Looking forward to seeing his increasingly positive contribution to our progress this season.
Of course, all of the above counts for nothing if we fail to bring in what arguably are the two biggest pieces of business that we had to do this summer, namely, bringing in a decent number 6 and a striker/ versatile attacking player with goals in them.
Gueye / Guirassy?
Whoever they may end up being, I assume we will pull these two pieces of business off somehow, but our season very much hinges upon this happening. I assume that these two signings are also the most difficult to get over the line, particularly given our FFP restrictions, hence the delay in them happening, to date.
I actually would like to see us bring in two attacking players with a tack record in goal getting. We're just so light up top right now.
Would be more than happy to accept offers for a number of players too:
Gomes, Gbamin, Mina, Davies, Allan, Doucoure, Gray - assuming we then brought in enough suitable cover to not leave ourselves short in any of the above areas.
We're getting there, folks. Rome wasn't built in a day, and all of that old shite.
Judge the progress once the world cup's here. It's way too early to make knee-jerk reactions at present.
