Same, I’m not concerned at all…
We’re more solid and cohesive than we were nearly all of last season, we just lack a focal point and cutting edge up front. Not surprising when our main forward is out for 6-8 weeks and the only replacement is half fit and wouldn’t start for any other PL team.
I think we’ll be unexciting but comfortable. A decent forward and another wide attacking option would make a big difference, however. But I understand and am fully on board with just getting the foundations in place right now and adding the quality later (i.e. next season when we have more financial wriggle room).
…I don’t think we’re hopeless now, we’ve upgraded ourselves back to “in need of some key strengthening” not least of all the striker obviously. I guess we don’t look calamitous anymore. Which is a start.
If Onana is as decent as he suggests he might be, plus get Gueye in (or A.N.Other) plus a striker and we might advance to the next rung of the ladder which is “respectable mid table”.
Takes time. FL should be allowed to get on with it, I hope we don’t start making it harder for him. I hope McNeil is also given time to show what he can do when we have a striker in the team etc. He might turn out to be crap, he might be a useful player once he’s found his feet.
That initial setup was all wrong. Second time in a row Lampard tried that front three with zero result. Just ditch it already. Gordon is useless up front. Move him to left. And what did we try? Let them come to 40 yards from our goal. Hopefully win the ball back. Then what? Our players were crowded so usually it ended with a long (and mostly poor) kick from Pickford to Gordon. No wonder we had zero threat.
Not sure what McNeil's issue is. Not at the races again today.
Iwobi again our best player. Only one who looked to have a clue what to do with the ball.
Patterson showing promising signs. Got tired towards the end which is expected from such a young lad playing wing-back. Mykolenko ditto was active and had some good moments.
Tarkowski was defensively solid but what happened to his passing? Some shockers there.
Holgate seems to have continued his good run from tail end of last season. Second most improved player in the squad since Lampard took over.
A half-fit Rondon improved our attack that much? Imagine what a decent forward could do. Onana is also a tank. Yes, their second goal came from his mistake but that's probably why he wasn't on from the beginning. PL is a totally different league to Ligue 1. He has to relearn when he has time on the ball.
Gray shouldn't start. He's just not very good. Impact sub.
