…presume the argument is they were trying to challenge for the ball with the other Madrid forward, as opposed to playing the ball, if that’s a difference that can easily be defined.

I can honestly say I never knew that. Always thought it had to be a pass from another team mate.
Admittedly, like many of the VAR decisions in Liverpool's favour, some of that maybe may not be entirely correct.
