We also have some beautiful archipelagos along the west coast and eastern Finland has plenty of lakes. Best time to visit, IMO, is summer. You could hire a summer cottage for a couple of days on one of the lakes there. Take a night sauna and dip in the lake. Then go back to sauna. Repeat as many times as you fancy. Have a beer overlooking the lake (but not too many if you take those dips!). Nightless nights are just magic. You can't truly understand them before you have experienced them.
Trains are easy enough in the Nordic countries although the track width is different in Finland so you need to switch trains at the border. Previous MessagePrevious MessagePrevious Message
In 1974 as a 17 year old, me & a couple of mates bought Interrail tickets and travelled around western Europe by train for a month.
This year is the 50th anniversary of Interrail & to mark this they had a 50% sale. I've recently retired, & have treated myself to a 2 month ticket that gives me unlimited travel on European trains. I intend to travel either this autumn or next spring.
I'm thinking of heading to northern Norway & Sweden, then Finland, the Baltic states & Eastern Europe.
Does anyone have any advice on northern Scandanavia, places to see, travel (especially trains) etc. Also, same re the Baltic countries?
