It's surprising he does not want to follow in their footsteps and play for Real. Zidane however leaving Real a year ago maybe put a spanner in the works, as I am sure if Zidane were still there Mbappé would be going.

Those are two primo targets they are missing out on. They obviously chose not pursue Haaaland to concentrate on MBappé and now are getting jipped, something they are not used to at all.
MBappé significant and singular lack of ambition staying put for $$$ and opting not to play at the absolute pinnacle of the sport.
I might have grown up in France, and I love Marseille (not as much as Everton!), but France really is a farmer's league. Winning title after title year after year, kind of boring.

I've often thought Carlo has had a season and a half with us to have a close look at DCL and Richarlison. They might not be absolute top élite players right now, but Carlo will have a good idea on whether they can be. I've thought for quite some time that a reuniting at Real Madrid might be a real option for one or both of them if a certain number of circumstances and the timing come together.
Haaland to City and MBappé staying at PSG may be two contributing factors.
