yesterday we can blame Branthwaite's red on the lack of a penalty but it also showed a vulnerability to a quick counter attack which is partly a weak mental attitude
i really thought that having galvanised the team the epic efforts of our fan base were going to see us safe, and it'd be all eyes on Thelwell and Lampard in the summer to see if they were able to be third time lucky for a manager/DoF pair that have to succeed within a terribly organised football organisation
But having taken 1 point from Watford (a) and Brentford (h) I think we are right back in trouble, once again relying on good luck and a Goodison under the lights atmosphere. The players were bailed out by the fans, but should have seen us over the line last two games.
Maybe relegation is just what we need. That'd be the sort of extreme shock that would actually prompt a mass clear out. It would force Frank to bring in the youth. And being favourites for promotion would mean we'd need to forge a playing style that is front foot and capable of breaking down defensive sides. If Frank gets that right, perhaps we return to the PL with a new mentality, hunger, core identity.
My worry now is that even if we crawl over the finish line, probably having relied on Burnley or Leeds to fail to pick up further points, we go into next season similar to this. With an average squad that is ok at backs to the wall stuff, not bad on the counter, but totally lacking in ideas and control of the football against weaker sides.
We get these shitty decisions because it's inevitable that the teams at the top of the league have more going their way. We fix that by winning.
