Branthwaite decision. Genuine question

For all the talk of whether or not there should have been a penalty immediately before the red card, my question is simply should that have been a red card anyway? From what I saw 2 players were running together. Legs contacted and one fell over. Maybe it’s my age but for the majority of my football years there had to be a deliberate foul. Branthwaite didn’t pull him back, didn’t try and trip him, didn’t handball etc. Surely a game changing red card decision needs to have a clear element of intent. I didn’t see that. Ergo not a red card Or am I talking bollocks?
