This 'Holgate in midfield' option always seems to be a purely fan-generated option, and seemingly the last thing that any of our managers ever seem to be tempted to do, bar a couple of times many moons ago.
We really are appallingly weak in so may areas of the squad, aren't we?
All this talk of right backs, wingers and strikers is fair enough, but even prior to Doucoure's injury, central midfield was always my number one place for strengthening.
In defence we can be solid enough if not spectacular, with Holgate or Godfrey covering the full-back positions.
Likewise the Iwobi and Gordon options on the flanks. Not great, but at least offering something.
But what do we have in the centre? Absolutely nothing. A permanently crocked Delph. A God-knows-what player in Gbamin (I doubt we'll ever find out), and two place holders in Davies and Gomes who offer next to nothing of substance game after game.
An attacking player and a central midfielder of substance are absolute priorities for me in January.
will he replace him with another midfielder or go 5 at the back and rely on set pieces and Townsend, Richarlison and Gray taking advantage of the few counters we'll have.
Personally i'd stick Holgate in midfield and get Allan playing further forward
All to step into his shoes
There was a moment vs West Ham where he was involved in a fairly innocuous looking challenge, the cameras cut away, and then showed him running back to cover, grimacing a little.
Perhaps it was then?
is set to undergo an operation on his foot and faces an extended period out.
He's damaged his metatarsal and is set for a prolonged spell out of the team
