I'm not sure that makes much sense.
For over 30 years working with DHL, Wincanton, TDG and Sainsburys. All of these major players saw this coming years ago yet only made very limited investment in training new drivers to replace the obviously aging workforce. Continental drivers were very rare in the UK.
Above everything what has caused the current problems to explode is that a massive number of drivers have decided to retire early at the same time as governments over the last decades have encouraged youngsters to study media at some minor university and take on stupid personal debt.
There are similar shortages in many trades but these arenít reported, and to some extent was papered over with cheap European labour.
Our education model needs a serious rethink. Why would an 18 year old rather go to university, take on £50k of debt and realistically end up working in a call centre when for an investment of 10% of Uni debt could be in a rock solid, high demand job paying £40k plus?
Covid has a lot to do with this short-term, but Brexit is the main reason they won't return and why there will likely be a long term Labour shortage.
Brits don't generally want to do it because the money and conditions are shit.
So either wages have to go up dramtically with prices following suit, or we just have to get used to not being able to buy things we used to take for granted.
We could, as some have suggested, change the immigration rules to let drivers back in but would they want to come? I doubt it. Same problems are biting in farming and fishing, and they're here to stay.
because the border checks have meant that some EU drivers no longer can be bothered with the hassle.
The main reason, though, is that young HGV drivers are not joining the profession in sufficient numbers: the average age is 55. Changes to the tax rules have also acted as a deterrent to recruitment. Above all, the pandemic has caused mayhem with the scheduling of driving tests and the issue of licences. Brexit is an issue, but itís nowhere near being the main factor.
