That doesn’t explain why there are severe shortages in the USA and Germany
I agree 100% that the drivers are badly paid and wages will have to go up. That won’t cause inflation of itself: we’re “only” talking about 100,000 drivers. Inflation will arise from years of QE and massive injections of liquidity via the furlough scheme.
I agree it’s a mess.
Covid has a lot to do with this short-term, but Brexit is the main reason they won't return and why there will likely be a long term Labour shortage.
Brits don't generally want to do it because the money and conditions are shit.
So either wages have to go up dramtically with prices following suit, or we just have to get used to not being able to buy things we used to take for granted.
We could, as some have suggested, change the immigration rules to let drivers back in but would they want to come? I doubt it. Same problems are biting in farming and fishing, and they're here to stay.
because the border checks have meant that some EU drivers no longer can be bothered with the hassle.
The main reason, though, is that young HGV drivers are not joining the profession in sufficient numbers: the average age is 55. Changes to the tax rules have also acted as a deterrent to recruitment. Above all, the pandemic has caused mayhem with the scheduling of driving tests and the issue of licences. Brexit is an issue, but it’s nowhere near being the main factor.
