Re: Just finished Pat Nevin's book
Do most Evertonians support Celtic over Rangers?!
It's interesting to see opinions from Evertonians that Nevin's book is in some way out of order, because the Howard Kendall anecdotes aside (clearly he wasn't a Kendall player), Nevin's book is pretty much an A-Z of what you'd consider would ring true with most Evertonians.
Working class upbringing. Supported Celtic over Rangers. Always stood up for the underdog. Was deeply obsessed by fringe indy bands, John Peel etc. Was a cracking little skilful player who always gave his all (hadn't realised how incredibly fit Nevin was). Had a 'team over the individual' mentality. Left wing in his political outlook. Refused to sell-out to marketing department demands that were made of him (in terms of the content of his articles etc.).
The list goes on.
HK comes out of it looking terrible. Couple of anecodotes
- being pissed during a game to the point the players were making tactical changes on the pitch
- excluding Nevin and Hinchy for not being drinkers
- Mo Johnston missing training for being on the lash, going in to apologise to HK who opened a bottle of champagne and polished it off with him
Says also that there was a clear divide between the older players and the new signings (Cottee etc) which never really went away. He does say that if we'd won the 89 Cup Final he feels that team could have lifted off though, but as it was it all fell away.
The best anecdote was big Nev challenging the players to beat him with long shots and spending 10 minutes saving all of them without using his hands. Amazing.
