We should have sold Kenny after his loan to Schalke
His stock was highest then, but most all at his age at the time, if we were not ready to bring him into the 1st team then we should have been cashing in, not stringing it out.
I really do not understand the policy of keeping players around who have no chance of becoming first team squad material. It's a negative for them, and a negative for any other younger lads who don't a get a look in because the older players are still around...
Nails it, for me.
What's going on that stops it?
We used to be ace at bringing players through. Now we're terrible. Who and what is the reason?
After Kenny's performance I thought I'd see who else we have at RB. Kyle John appears next cab off the rank - but he's 20! This seems to me to illustrate what is wrong with our youth setup.
A 20 year old right back, if they were going to make it would have at least had a game or two by now. The fact that he hasn't and hasn't been sold when he has some value is insane.
We (rightfully) complain about the RS doing well in getting young players out the door at top $, but there's a structure in place there where players go out on loan and get game time at clubs that suit them and either get in the shop window or come back to play for the first team.
Our approach to loaning players is ridiculous, I can't think of the last player who went out on loan and came back a better player. We seem to have a large number though who go out and either don't get a game (indicating we don't vet the clubs properly) or regress (again with the vetting and style of play).
If you look at Chelsea/Man City/Liverpool - the whole point of a youth setup is to generate income through player sales and create players for the first team. We do neither.
I don't know why Unsworth hasn't been binned off yet, but this is entirely on him and Brands. The talent is there - we have players from U16 onwards who play representative football, they just seem to hit a wall and lose their way. To my mind this is the biggest failure of the current regime.
