The worry I have now is, with DCL and Richy out, the team is entirely dependant on Gray and Townsend, for creativity, goals.
Our central midfield barely has a goal in it. Doucoure is getting forward a bit more and I guess could get a few this season, but Allan, Davies, Gomes, Gordon, Iwobi, etc dont have a goal in them
Obviously, when all fit, Richy, DCL, Gray and Townsend, is a decent attack. But take two bits out and no one else is stepping up, or capable of stepping up.
No just in terms of attack, but also defence, the problem isnt squad size, its squad strength
Delph*, Siggy*, Davies, Gomes, Tosun*, James (gone?)*, Iwobi, Gbamin, JJK* - not good enough and/or waste of squad spot
Arguably a couple of centre backs could go in that list too
But even without cbs, thats 9 senior players out of a squad of 22/23 who are pretty ineffective. At best you never want more than 2 of them on the pitch at same time.
Next summer we lose 5 of them min (* ones) but we also could lose 1 or 2 of the important players - so suddenly we need 6 or 7 players - purely through contracts ending and old age and current squad gaps
We need a year of sucking it up, clearing out more crap in the summer, and buying well
The last thing we need, is a change in manager in the next 2 seasons (unless we are bottom 5 at Xmas and looking in danger - but even then, any new manager is working with the above mess)
Its the reality of the situation
Financial restrictions prevent us just buying 10 players and having 35 players on the books, so we have to suck it up.
Losing the 5* players next summer doesnt just free up wages, but opens up squad spots.
If we could shift another 2 from that list of 9, great - especially as the remaining 4 are Davies, Gomes, Gbamin and Iwobi - 3 central midfield squad spots taken by people not upto it.
Its a tough ask, and not a lovely proposition for fans.
And like I said, all the above isnt taking into account centre backs.
