Re: a football team is a balancing act...
I'm 100% in agreement with this.
IF, Brands can unearth a hungry, similar type of player (in the rough gem mould), then Rodriguez could be the sort of player we could keep around, but that's yet another incoming to add to the list that we all hope for but may very well be unable to make happen.
in the case of rodriguez, he's undeniably skilful. that's not in question.
the problem is that he's also a) expensive and b) unreliable. he is the very definition of a luxury player, and as a team we simply aren't in a position to accommodate that sort of player.
the balancing act is whether the manager can get enough value out of him to warrant the expense and disruption of having such a player. if we had a not-as-good-but-same-type-of-player alternative available, and they were a straight swap, then that'd be easier to accomodate. however, our swap-in options are iwobi, gray and townsend - none of whom can provide the same sort of game as rodriguez.
so, if we don't have a straight swap available then we're asking a team who've struggled for consistency and confidence to swap tactics and change formations every time the 'star player' doesn't feel like playing or picks up a niggly injury or whatever it is that's keeping him out. as a manager, i think i'd probably value consistency of approach and personnel more than the occasional bit of extra quality on the pitch for where everton are right now.
personally, i'd prefer to keep him around if it's at all viable - if only for the increased reach and visibility it gives us in south america. however, i completely understand why our manager would look to move him out. psychologically, too, he's also saying to the rest of the team that a) even a superstar is expendable and b) the overall good of the team is more important to him. throw in that benitez and he clashed over his fitness/effort at real, and i suspect it's a mutual decision to part ways.
as to delph - good bloody riddance. i was happy when we got him given his history, but by all the gods he's done everything he can to prove me completely wrong since then.
