.... from the penalty spot. The game came back to my mind when Jimmy passed away recently. I was in the Park End stand with a couple of my uncles and one of my cousins. We had a pork pie each at halftime (my Uncle Tom "treated" himself to two) ... we were all sick when we got home, and my Uncle Tom collapsed to his knees when he got out of the car after parking up at home
Derek Temple scored the winner, in a goal that I recall being almost identical to the winner he scored in the Cup Final against the same goalkeeper and the same team five months earlier. I mentioned this GP goal to him when I met him about 15/20 years ago, but he couldn't remember that winner in front of us at the Park End.... just another goal to him, I suppose!
My second game was in the same group of four two weeks later -no pork pies this time- when we beat Leicester 2-0. So the first three goalkeepers that I saw in live action were the not-too-shabby trio of Gordon West, Ron Springett and Gordon Banks
Now this might have legs, it might not. I know I'd certainly be interested. As Pablo hasn't bothered to take us on a short and entertaining break to a Witches forum this summer (again!), those who like to type away and share memories, can do so.
Apologies to those who haven't been, but it might give you a flavour of why we still bloody follow them!
Mine was 3rd Dec 1988 against Spurs...I was 14. Went with a mate called Stephen Higgins, also 14. Got the train from Formby, off at Bank Hall and then the walk to the ground. Straight in the Gwladys Street, where I am pretty sure we stood at the top of a stair well on the wrong side of barrier, with one arm over the metal railing.
We won 1-0 (Cottee), which was seen by 29,657 of us.
The players I saw that day...Big Nev, Psycho Pat, Snods, Ratcliffe, Watson, Bracewell, Tricky Trev, McCall, Sharp (and Clarke coming on for him), Cottee and Ian Wilson (who I think I saw in 2006 in NZ at a game!)...some of those names! Spurs had Gazza and Waddle playing for a start too!
I remember it being Cottee's 100 league goal and I shouted out "One hundred" and got some weird looks.
From that day - hooked...Junior Evertonian, season ticket, reserve games and away games when I could afford it.
Home games were boss, watch Saint and Greavsie until the adverts and then jump on the train, walk to the ground and walk around it...have a chat with some away fans and get a fanzine from them, watch the game, get home and then me Dad (before he started going to the games with me a few years later) would head out and buy the Pink Echo (he bloody worked for the Echo for 20+ years - should have been free!
Great memories...although I did watch some shit football, in a half empty ground for a while. We always seems to play Luton Town/Coventry City on New Years eve or New Years day and it was always rubbish...important enough for me to remember.
I'd been nagging and nagging for years to go, having followed them in the papers, on TV and through my Dad and eventually my parents just gave up and caved in.
Anyway - what was yours?
