Benitez didnít help making it friendly. Nt
Back in the day the merseyside derby was a big spirited competitive game, but it was known as 'the friendly derby'. I think this was to do with the rivalries being with Manchester (United) and the London clubs.
What happened? My take: reds fans got majorly frustrated when they stopped winning in the 90's and going into the 2000's. The internationalization of their fanbase (Norwegians and Indians, etc) lost the local feel it had back in the day and the spirit of competition changed to become snide and condescending.
Shame because I've plenty of mates on the red site of the city, but it's just not the way it used to be.
Anyone else got a take on this? Why did it change?
