He got lucky. He was far too defensive against a poor and slow Croatia team
But he got the result and thats all that matters.
The system he set England up with there limited the effectiveness of Englands best players, Foden and Kane. And even though Sterling scored, he tried his best to miss, he shouldn't have started. It should've been Sancho or Grealish.
I could understand it if England was playing against Belgium, France or Italy. But it was Croatia, who i think will struggle to get out of the group.
Croatia (and everybody else) thought it’d be a double pivot with the fullbacks bombing forward but Southgate instead pushed Phillips forward and picked experienced FBs, instructing them to be a bit more cautious?
