The last (and only) time that I can recall our fans being of a similar optimistic mindset was during Colin Harvey's stint as manager. Coming off the back of some gloriously successful years under Kendall, even when Harvey's team were underwhelming us week in and out and we were sat in 6th position, some way off the top, I seem to recall that Evertonians were still figuring out the permutations that would lead to us pipping the rest to the title.
Teams that have some degree of success and actually win stuff along the way tend to be, understandably, of a more optimistic mindset.
Our decades of mediocrity, predictably, has produced a mindset of negativity and trepidation amongst the fanbase.
I can remember Martinez first season in the January, we were 4th, they were 5th
Our fans were talking about holding on to top 6, thier fans were talking about winning the league
Even when they are shite and we are good (rare combo) we always look on the bad side :D
Overall though 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th
Whats important is how many points can we finish with
We have 7 from the last 4 games, some folk predicted 1 point from 5 games so we've beaten that
If we crack 60 points, its good progress
For all the ups and downs, its something to build on.
The key then will be to better it next season, we havent strung together back to back seasons over 60 points since Moyes final (63) and Martinez 1st (72).
So if we can crack 60 this season, and then build on it. Good stuff.
