Wasn't it more a PL rule...
ie. the prize for finishing 4th in the PL was a CL spot, and it was the PL that backed our claim, and UEFA had to bend the knee (temporarily) to allow the RS back in.
The FA didn't have a say
The FA said under their rules it was top 4 so we qualified not the shite
UEFA then created a new rule to let Liverpool in as defending champions
The Spanish FA did whatever Real Madrid wanted as per.
I remember at the time a question mark over whether we'd be allowed to enter the CL if Liverpool won it.
they subsequently clarified the rule (i.e. the "extra" place is given to the CL winner) but at the time I thought it was ambiguous??
After all, the previous time it happened, 2000, the 4th place Spanish team went to the UEFA cup to allow Real Madrid to defend the CL. I remember at the time that being the precedent that people were concerned about.
anyway, here's the relevant rule on the PL website for this season:
"In the event that a Premier League club win the UEFA Champions League and another win the UEFA Europa League and neither of these clubs finish in the top four of the Premier League, the club lying fourth in the table will drop into the UEFA Europa League group stage."
Saw on Twitter that it’d be very Everton if:
We finish 4th
Liverpool are lower, but win Champions League
Spurs or Arsenal are lower but win Europa
I’m which case we’d be Europa, not CL.
And unlike last time I doubt UEFA would change the rules to suit us.
