What was missing?
I pointed out that it hardly happens anymore that we buy someone from a lower division (the Championship doesn’t count, as the Cahill example shows) with a smallish amount, and that that player could contribute immediately. The thing I might have added is that ”nobody” knew about Pointon when he was purchased.
Btw, Jermaine, you were hardly an unknown player when you starred for Leeds. A successful loan to Scnuthorpe United ensured that. 😬
By the way, wasn't it about time for a nearly 25 years old international to step up from the second highest level to the PL in 2004? After all you had already played in the FA Cup final. 😉
Came to think about it, wasn't Neil Pointon a makeweight in the transfer of Andy Hinchcliffe from ManCity, or is my memory doing tricks?
Funny that in 1985 we could still go and buy a player from Scnuthorpe United (Pointon) for a reasonably low price, and he could step in pretty quickly and do a decent if unspectacular job on the highest level. Wouldn't happen anymore. Not that we are playing on the highest level anymore either...
