Re: Watching that Nov 2007 Sunderland game
Fair dos, but in my memory Lescott had his best period for us at left back and about half a decent season at centre half. Yobo was a mistake a game minimum.
Iím astonished that youíd pick Holgate and Mina over Yobo and Lescott. The latter were (so far at least) a far stronger and more dependable pairing than Holgate and Mina. As much promise as he has, I think Holgate is currently one of those players that Evertonians are desperate to laud do the heavens and back, yet is still prone to a lot of errors and defensively not yet anywhere near as good as either Yobo or Lescott. Time will tell though.
Disagree re Howard, Neville, Yobo, Lescott. Add to it that it is a team which is picked not just a selection of individuals. Other than that I see your point
And thinking about our current line-up. Youth and potential for improvement-aside for a moment, I canít help but feel that most of that 2007 line-up would make it into our first team today, quite easily.
Howard / Pickford = Not much to choose between them.
Neville / Sidibe or Coleman = Probably Neville. Limited though he was as a player, his leadership would be invaluable and Coleman and Sidibe are just too erratic or old or defensively suspect these days.
Valente / Baines or Digne = Baines or Digne
Holgate / Yobo = Yobo
Mina / Lescott = Lescott
Carsley / Davies or Delph = Carsley by a mile
Arteta / Gomes or Sigurdsson = Arteta
Pienaar / Bernard = Pienaar (but a close call. Would be great to have one on each flank)
Osman / Walcott = Osman all day
Cahill / DCL = Cahill (For his goals plus attitude and winning mentality, but clearly DCL has bags of potential)
Yakubu / Richarlison = Richarlison (his Goals + work rate and winning attitude puts him well ahead of Yakubuís plentiful goal supply)
So if we give Pickford the nod, thatís only 3/11 of our current first team.
Very big job ahead for Carlo.
