but by the time I'd started going to games regularly, it was less overt. I've heard the odd thing, mainly at away games but said in somewhat hushed tones as though racists knew that such language/behaviour was generally frowned upon. That doesn't seem to be the case any more.
Definitely feels like we're going backwards.
In the 80's it was absolutely commonplace. Goodison was particularly bad for it.
Chants would include
Everton are white
Trgger trigger trigger
And one to the muppet theme tune - its time to shoot the n word its time to kill his wife its time to pull the trigger down at goodison park tonight.
Add in spurs to auschwitz and it was all abhorrent.
But in fairness West Ham, Chelsea, Millwall, Leeds, Liverpool were all as bad. After all the first fans to throw bananas at Barnes were LFC when he played for them.
you also had West Brom who had regis Cunningham batson- who broke through and instead of being called the three musketeers were named the three degrees by manager players and media alike.
it got better later 80's early 90's as people started popping ecstacy rather than skinfuls of ale but it defo didn't leave the game.
what happened at yeovil is horrific - is it as bad as the 70's and 80's- possibly not but its all about context- to me any racist should be battered- no reasoning with fascists just bully them as they are built on bullying.
when the white man march came to Liverpool several years back they were met by a mob not of crusty scarf wearing anti-fa's but a group of older lads from a variety of background and skill sets. the master race begged the police to save them. because that's what facsists do- complain about stuff then moan like bitches when they have to front it with even or less than even numbers.
Who would have thought, even 5 years ago, that this kind of incident would happen at an English football ground?
Being an ignorant, knuckle dragging racist seems to have become normalised.
For those old enough to remember, was this the kind of thing that went on in the 70s and early 80s? Or is this worse?
