great credit for the two important saves in the last 10 minutes.
As for midfield gaps - I've never understood playing on 2 there.
Couldn't catch the match live so just finished watching it.
I'm a bit on the fence here. On the plus side offensively we were much, much better we have been so far this season. So in that sense changes worked. Davies in particular was instrumental in pushing the team forward with his passing. Always looking for the forward pass first.
And as I have said several times before, when Gomes plays well, the team plays well. If he was this good consistently he'd be top player. He is so good at keeping position under pressure and then moving the ball to a better position. The problem with that duo, however, is that there are gaps in midfield.
I think that midfield also helped Iwobi who saw a lot more of the ball than Sigurdsson usually does. But whether that is because the midfield moved the ball forward or his movement, hard to tell on just this showing. But he definitely moves the ball around well. Sidibe's contribution can't be overstated because he was constantly available on the right.
Defensively we were solid in the first half but there were couple of scares in the second. Almost conceded again from a corner as well (even though it never should have been in the first place).
Peter Enckelmann, the ex-Aston Villa keeper thought ref was right in disallowing Mina's goal. He though Gomes blocked the defender on purpose and this gave Mina a free header. He might technically be right but could you see any ref blowing the whistle if that was Liverpool instead?
Nevertheless, we should have been out of sight before West Ham got a few chances so all in all it was a very good performance. No-one would have complained if the match had ended 4-0 or 4-1.
