Oooh clever pun. Nt
Gimmicky to the extreme, but will probably be valuable someday I suppose.
As for the album I've only listened to it twice so I'll need more time with it. It's better than I was expecting but my expectations were deliberately cautiously low. At this point I feel it's strengt is also it's weakness, in that the guitars and drums frequently remind me of Lateralus which is my favourite Tool album by far and one of my favourite albums ever. This immediate familiarity tickled my nostalgia button nicely, but … it's been 13 years since the last album and 18 years since Lateralus. If I want to be incredibly harsh I can say that many tracks sound a bit like Lateralus recording session cast offs that weren't good enough to make that album. For a band of their reputation as prog metal pioneers should we not expect something more aurally challenging after such a long absence?
At the same time I feared they might go too far into experimentation so I am actually glad it's an album I can listen to and enjoy even if doesn't measure up to their best work
....wanted to have a bit of time to digest it before making a judgement but I think after around a month of it sinking into my consciousness I can officially declare it a thing of beauty.
Amazing depth to it, almost unparalleled. And it rocks, obviously. Never seen them live but hoping they come over here in 2020.
Do others partake in listening to "psychedelic prog metal"? ;-)
