Strangely enough, my dad had exactly the opposite experience...
...when he went away to sea with the merchant navy aged 15 (which would have been around 1960) he said that he was relentlessly and aggressively pursued and hassled by the gay men that he worked alongside to the point that he has sadly been deeply prejudiced ever since
Fortunately we were brought up to be far more tolerant, although - as Col said - we often used insults and derogatory phrases that wouldn't be acceptable now, although I've had to coach my son out of saying similar, so it's still absolutely a thing, sadly.
