...and that's before you factor in the likes of Stek, Jagielka, Baines, Tarashaj...even Lookman and Vlasic etc etc
There's such a big job that was needed to move players on that he's been operating with one hand behind his back. So until we've shifted 90% of the deadweight it's hard to truly judge as his ceiling is limited. That said, I was highly critical of our approach to Zouma/the centre back position in the summer and I still think he got that badly wrong. Likewise central midfield, where it was clear Gueye was going and we already needed one more (and even with Gbamin as his replacement, we didn't move on - Gomes was retained, Delph replaced McCarthy).
I think it's fair to say that a bigger argument can be made that Silva's not getting the most out of what we do have. Granted, we're arguably still short right down the spine (centre back and central midfield, certainly, centre forward possibly). And we need more cover in wide positions - at the back and the front. But we still have a better squad at our disposal than e.g. Eddie Howe, Roy Hodgson, Dean Smith etc...and yet all of them have at least matched him in the games so far this season.
We're also guilty of playing the same way, all the time. Slow and sideways in midfield, move it to the wings to cross it in for the lone forward. And if Kean's the future in that position then that's not a tactic that's going to suit his game at all. He's just not that sort of a forward. It's why I think you have to play him and Calvert-Lewin together, either dropping Sigurdsson completely or dropping him into centre midfield (which I wouldn't mind seeing us try, given that he will at least move the ball forwards from there). Again tho, this is all up to Silva to manage. And the evidence over his entire body of work with us - despite a very solid back end to last season - isn't anything to get excited about.
Brands will have time (and rightly so, imo). Silva may not have that luxury.
