So there is no way for us to leave the EU
unless Ireland leaves too, or the North stays aligned to the CU? As I said I dont want to leave, but I do see us being effectively trapped as far from ideal.
...but if they didn't you could probably put the border down the Irish Sea, as I mentioned.
The DUP would love such a Europe so they'd welcome it, no doubt...
The thing is the GFA is a treaty under international law. We can't just break it because it is inconvenient...
Lets turn the tables, lets imagine an EU that had shifted to the right, was striping workers rights, was blocking environmental protection and gay rights etc. Many of us in the centre and on the left would want to leave such an organization, how would we feel to be told we cant really leave because of the implications to Ireland. The people saying (including me) that there is no solution to the border are basically saying we are trapped in at least a customs union, I am massively pro EU (in principle if not all practice) but if we are saying there is no real way to leave, thats not good is it?
Just heard an interview with dutch customs expert Hans Hassen, he is pretty sure the solutions to the border are there and the alternative arrangements will negate the need for any hard border. My first reaction was...bullshit....but he knows a lot more about customs arrangements and borders than I do, arent I just being one of those people who disregards experts if what they say doesnt chime with my views, maybe?
If we do leave with no deal, wont RoI suddenly like the idea of the alternative arrangements and wont the EU find a way for there to be no hard border?
Im not saying I am certain about any of the above, but I can see why people might think the EU and remainers are using the issue.
