I don't dislike black people, i'm fine on a train with Romanians. I quite like freedom of movement. But I see the EU as a neo-liberal organisation that is used by the member states in order to serve their own national interests, many of which are based on economics that I don't agree with. I think the organisation is fundamentally undemocratic in its nature. I vote labour, i'm an democratic socialist at heart with libertarian social views.
It could perhaps have been handled a lot better, although it clearly hasn't and some predicted that, so there is that - and I think that it's clear that the whole thing has been not just handled badly but maybe could never be "handled" at all in any way that didn't result in a serious economic downturn, although we will never know that as we don't have some parallel universe to see how things could have worked out with different leadership, parliament layout etc.
I've always thought that there were 2 issues - the issue of do you want to be in (fundamentally) or not - and the second issue of how bad leaving will be. 1 sets your view, 2 sets out whether the pain you go through is worth achieving 1. I was of the opinion that being in was overall negative and that leaving wouldn't, overall, tip the balance enough to make my view on the first question change enough to make me want to stay in. In hindsight, the way it has actually worked out so far, I think that was wrong - although we're still not certain, it looks like leaving in itself will be so hard and with such consequences that remaining inside the EU, even with it's shit bits, is probably better than leaving but adding in even more shitness overall due to the consequences of leaving.
Leaving without a deal will be bad, with a likely significant downturn in the economy for many years - but I don't share your apocalyptic predictions around food shortages that endanger life etc. It's possible, but I think it's unlikely. We will see. I'm not kitting out the bunker yet.
Hope this helps, please don't ask me to explain why what Boris is doing is right as I have never, now can I envisage me ever, voting for the Conservative Party.
