It's not that he's a *bad* manager as such, it's more that he never achieves anything more than mid-table semi-respectability. I suppose if you're a chairman of a relatively unambitious club that wants an experienced, affable, undemanding manager who won't rock the boat too much, he could be seen as the go-to guy.
Not an original observation, I know. Looking more and more hideous as time marches on, though.
