I've been aware of this technique for a decade and I've spoken to a few guys about it on here. I would hardly describe it as "the" solution. I've never liked it since holding my breath made me feel more panicky. I chose the path of breath relaxation techniques, acceptance commitment therapy and CBT, and I've had great success with them.
The breath hold isn't for everybody, not everybody has the nerve to hold their breath beyond gasping point. Just saying.
