With the exception of the head coach telling them ahead of time, "you are going to run play A unless you see X on the defense in which case switch to play B".

I find it odd that an assistant coach on a h.s. team is designated the "offensive coordinator".

When I played high school football, it was pretty much just head coach and assistant coaches.

but our head coach called all the play on offense. Our D-coordinator called the defense.

My head coach (Illinois High School Coaches Hall of Fame member) was pretty hands-on.

I know he called all the offensive plays. Pretty certain he had a lot of input into the defensive side of things as well.
