The conventional Russian army is largely a paper tiger. It really has been since the early days following the collapse of the Soviet Union and the rampant bandit capitalism which has taken place ever since. Poor training, generally poor equipment (at least en masse), poor logistics, poor leadership, poor morale and shockingly poor combined arms military tactics. Most high ranking Russian military officers are little more than de facto oligarchs who only care about preserving their own little positions of power.

However, the new Russian "Africa Corps" strategy is concerning. Similar to what it did throughout much of the 1960s, 70s and 80s, Russia is looking to develop client states and proxy armies throughout the African continent in an effort to thwart the West.
