Does anyone remember Shaun Livingston?

I was talking about high schoolers who went to the NBA on X with some guy and he came to mind.

I never realized how bad of a shooter he was. Dude was in the NBA for 14 years and had a total of 13 3 pointers. As a shooting guard.

Like, what? That's fewer 3s than Dwight Howard had.

game has sure changed; at his age 30, only 3 players averaged > 3 threes per game*

Just read a little about this. He apparently loved to take mid-range jump shots. That was pretty much his entire offensive game.

Actually it's quite the opposite. It's bad if you're a HS or D1 player, but not in the NBA.

You have to understand 2 things about the NBA.

1. You have to have 1 thing that you are elite at. Not good, elite. SL was elite at penetrating and getting/hitting a 2pt jumper.

2. The NBA is a collection of 25-40 insane level basketball players with multiple elite skills and 420 supporting role players with one elite skill.

SL played his last 7 years at Golden State with Steph and Klay....two of the greatest 3pt shooters ever to play the game. SL's role was to penetrate and A) hit a 2pt shot if he was open and B) penetrate and draw Steph or Klay's man to help side defense so he could then kick to them to hit an open 3. If SL was taking 3's himself at a mid level .350% over the 2 guys shooting 3's at a.430% then he would have been on the bench in favor of someone who understood and played their role.

The NBA is a game of measurements, math, and skill and the players have to have and understand the role of all 3. So I get that the stat on it's face seems outlandish for a shooting guard who played a decade and a half in the league, but it's actually a testament to how good of a role player he was for his organizations.

Not sure what you don't understand about playing your role perfectly on a team.

The NBA today is 100% math and metrics. Every team has a a group of analyst who know every statistic and metric of their players and they work with the coaches to design their offense around those numbers. Playing the game to maximize those metrics might add 1-3 points per 100 possessions, so they stick to the script obsessively. As I said earlier, there are like 30 players in the league who have the green light to go off script. They are the stars that have skills to transcend the others. The other 420 guys are 100% role players to run the system and support the star on their team. If they can't / won't do that, they won't get playing time or a new contract.

Sorry this is hard for you to comprehend, but Livingston was elite at what he was contracted to do and played his role to perfection. It's why he played 14 seasons in the most elite professional league in all of sports. It's why he made $50 million during his playing career. It's why he won 3 chips as a player. It's why was offered and served in the GS Front office for 3 years after his playing career ended.

If he was jacking up 3's and averaging .336% instead of playing his role, he'd had a 3-4 year seldom played career in the NBA followed by 8 years bouncing around Europe and Asia making 20% of what he made in the NBA.

. . . score nor distribute worth a shit for most of his career. Averaged 6.3 points a game for his career. Never had a season over 10. Only two seasons with averaging at least 5 assists. He was unquestionably an offensive afterthought, if not an outright liability.
