CPS plans to cut teacher positions, raise class sizes in bid to shrink $732 million deficit

It’s not yet clear how many teaching positions might be lost, though a WBEZ/Sun-Times analysis estimates it could be more than 700. CPS also plans to cut some assistant principal positions, but will increase spending on special education teachers.

Chicago Public Schools told principals Tuesday that the district is planning to cut the number of regular teachers who work in schools next year, a change that could result in bigger class sizes.

CPS is raising the student-to-teacher ratio it uses to provide funding to schools by 1 for every grade. For example, high-poverty elementary schools will get one teacher for every 23 students in the coming school year, up from one for 22 students this year.

It marks the first time in three years that CPS, facing a deficit, is proposing cuts that will directly hit classrooms. Prior to that, the school district was flush with federal COVID relief funding and did not face big shortfalls.

Markham, a kinda lower-middle class suburb of Chicago.

Oh yeah: hire the helicopter, charge the deposit for the bill to the taxpayers.

There is backlash over a helicopter landing used for prom pictures in the south suburbs.

The city of Markham has filed a lawsuit against a park district executive director who authorized the landing for her daughter's prom photos.

Markham police body camera video shows the helicopter landing in a field across from a basketball court where children were playing at the time.

According to a lawsuit filed by the city of Markham, Quintina Brown, the executive director of the Markham Park District, authorized a helicopter to land on the field of Roesner Park to be a backdrop for her daughter to take photos for prom on the evening of May 8.

That's in a residential area near 159th Street and Richmond Avenue.

Police said they noticed the helicopter flying really low over the area.

Officials said Brown's 17-year-old daughter was onboard.

The lawsuit from the city claims Brown created the contract with the helicopter company under the Markham Park District. It's unclear if the park district funds were used to pay for the helicopter, but the Markham city attorney says the city's zoning ordinance prohibits this kind of situation, especially when proper security was not in place.

The chopper's pilot said Brown paid his company, Summers Chicago Helicopter, $800 for a prom shoot and short tour.

According to court documents, the contract shows the park district as the client and the payee.

"Could have been a catastrophe because children were playing. They were, and it's in the police report. And they ran from the basketball court that they were playing on when this helicopter started coming down," Markham City Attorney Burt Odelson said. "You can't hire a helicopter for your kid and for prom. As nice as it is, you just can't do that."

Officials said the only written authorization for landing was an April 13 letter signed by Brown giving her teen approval to have the helicopter shoot.

The city is filing an injunction against the park district so this does not happen again.

City officials say the stunt violates Markham's zoning ordinances and park regulations.

Markham police eventually shut everything down.

Both Brown and the helicopter's pilot were cited by police for disorderly conduct and unauthorized landing on public property.

Brown said she is not in the office Wednesday due to her daughter's graduation and would not be available for an interview.

Burt Odelson, the lawyer in those videos, says its out of line. FWLIW he writes many of the ordinances, etc for the local suburbs in the Markham area.

SOMETHING ain't right. And we've not even crossed into who has to pay. Helicopter grounded for two hours over the originally contracted time. Liquidated damages clause in said contract is expensive for those two hours.

Eh. Who knows. Seems like every TV station in town sent someone down to cover the story. A lot of those types seem to think it's a story.

Since 2019, CPS added more than 9,700 staff positions. At the same time, it has seen a decline of 45,000 students.

coming up on tenure, and she’s awesome and actually happy but it’s kinda hard to trust these days. Sounds like next year will be good but when the pendulum swings back who knows? For all the talk about sustainability it sure feels like leaders don’t give a shit and media won’t tell the facts.

Question- has anyone else here heard that after USAID was eliminated last year, more AIDS drugs were given out than in previous years? All I’ve heard is HIV is going to skyrocket after Trump sliced USAID. And Mayor Johnson is going to destroy children with funding cuts…
