I am hanging with my granddaughters, who have three days of it this week. First grader had an hour and a half for lunch, and then stopped after 20 more minutes.

Fourth grader ended a half-hour early because she finished her assignment. Maybe you could have taught some more???

The fourth grader was “learning” about the American Revolution. Maybe we can discuss what was in class content. Let me tell you about causes of the revolution. Oh, grandpa, please no.

Every time I see how this works, it’s annoying.

I am glad these two are very bright and will get by.

After the first grader answered a simple arithmetic problem I gave her, we had this exchange:

Me: "That's about as easy as it gets."

Her: "No, grampa. 0 plus 0 is the easiest math problem there is. The answer is 0. You don't even have to think."

Hmm. Got me wondering what the easiest possible math problem might be. She might be right.

It's uniformly horrible. Any honest teacher will agree.

My sister teaches learning disabled, behavioral disabled junior high students, most of whom speak English as a second language. When Covid ushered in prolonged remote learning, many of her students disappeared. Still others clearly paid no attention whatsoever. These were kids who were already on the fringes. Remote learning ended whatever hopes they had left.

Guns. Have them.

When they have those bogus days, they like to do virtual. I think today and tomorrow are due to some issue with their specific school.

Heaven forbid turning a partial day into a full day to make up for snow days they are ignoring.

Not in Chicago, but around here kids get out of school early on Wednesdays. No reason mind you, just... it's Wednesday.

We get out an hour early on Wednesdays also...but it still counts for a full day. *

Our local system got the inevitable waiver for makeup days

When my kids were in school, the system built in a few days. If they ran out and did not hit the minimum, they always got a waiver from the state. Now they don’t even bother building in days now, partly because they have added more staff days and holidays.

This week they got yet another waiver and won’t make them up. Everything is an emergency and now they won’t even lengthen the school day.
