Yesterday was the birthday of my very first date back in high school. She moved away, and I later attended her wedding. We are connected on Facebook and occasionally exchange messages. Yesterday many people posted in one of those birthday threads.

Social media are good for keeping a toe in maintaining modest connections to observe what's going on. A guy in my HS class keeps a list of who has died, which is helpful.

Pretty sure I'm friends on FB with almost all of the girls I've dated. There are a few HS/College flings/encounters that I'm not, but all of the serious past relationships I'm at least FB friends with. I don't really interact with any of them though outside of the occasional thumbs up on a post or something on a group school chat.

for my junior prom i sat 3rd row at a Rainbow concert. no date for that.

senior prom i took a girl from Iowa City that i met on a People to People trip to Europe.

we are facebook friends, and i am also facebook friends with my first actual girlfriend. when i was a freshman at UIUC... she was a senior at Urbana HS.

i agree it's great for keeping in touch with im\portant people from the past.

A girlfriend had graduated early from Urbana HS (her father was an Engineering professor), and thus turned from 17 to 18 while we dated.

That was a positive of co-ed dorms back in the day when they were pretty new to the six pack. Opportunities for mixing.

like knowing what is going on in people's lives that I would otherwise not be able to keep up with.

It's especially good for extended family and I also belong to several groups of common interests that provide a lot of good content.

Just for fun: attended her wedding and the wedding of another lady who once was a romantic connection.

I assume it was with my first girlfriend but I cannot recall any specifics.

Anyway, my first girlfriend is not a FB person even though she has an account. She never posts or reads anything. I've been fortunate enough to see and briefly socialize with her a few times over the past decade at reunions and other informal class togethers.
