I recently learned that one of my very best friends from high school and college suddenly passed away. Leaving behind a wife and still relatively young kids. Just two weeks after his father had passed.

I don't know if "numb" is the right word to describe how I feel right now. "Disbelief" may be more apt. It just doesn't seem possible that my friend can be totally gone like that. And I hate having to proceed with my life right now, as if this had not happened. It feels disrespectful to my friend. I wish I could just shut everything down and check out for a while in order to properly mourn. I'm mad that life has to go on right now. I don't want it to.

The one with all the answers. One of those fucking Christians who says sorry for your loss, prayers for you, he’s in a better place (actually I’m not saying that cause I don’t know and I say that in as non-judgemental way as possible).

I remember when Lady Di died. Heard she was in a crash. Went to hospital. Next morning woke up to hear she had died (just read last week it was from torn aorta caused by weird way she hit the seat in front of her because she wasn’t wearing a seat belt and wasn’t taken to the hospital right away- freak death that should have never happened). I was about 40 and honest to God I had never felt the way I did waking up, hearing that news, and it hitting me that SHIT IM GONNA DIE SOME DAY. Must have been whistling in the dark for 40 years because none of my close friends or family had died yet, and went back to whistling. Over time more people died but I’d passed that one OH SHIT moment.

Then last year my best friend’s wife (60, in great shape, she still loved sex) up and died at the airport on the way to vacation. He was devastated, didn’t know what he would do. A year later he has a new girlfriend, also in good shape but taller and with better legs so he’s getting along just fine.

We all have some dark days. I feel like I have very few (a couple where I realized I’d lost out on a million bucks were kind of dark but it’s just money). None of my kids or wife has died, but have friends who have had that loss and it just hasn’t hit like Lady Di. I mourn with my friends but life goes on. It helps thinking that all this didn’t just pop out of nowhere, and that it usually makes lots of sense, and for all our bullshit we haven’t been smote into oblivion and there’s lots of hope here and I think way the fuck more when you give Whoever put all this together infinite time to come up with something really great… so I don’t lose sleep.

I think what you feel is completely normal. Prayers that you find the time and space to process your grief in whatever time table you need for eventual healing, allowing for the understanding that significant loss always changes you.

The group also had a helpful thread when one of our teachers died, trying to figure out who was left from the faculty / staff.

Ours slowly adding up.

We had a couple die very young. Like in their 20s. Both had different forms of aggressive cancer. Another died of a heroin overdose. And this girl was NEVER the girl you would think would be involved in that.

Yes, we had the traditional young adult losses, occasional 30-50, now picking up*
