As the Wall St Journal said today, "His role in that failed 2024 White House bid revealed a tendency for misstatements and exaggerations about his experiences and biography."

to an extent- we always had Italian and Puerto Rican neighborhoods where you’d hear foreign languages. But government was all in English, most factories and companies operated in English, taxes and police and schools were in English, so most adapted. I’d guess in MN many Somalis are adapting.

For me, the Sharia law part is most concerning. Fraud can be dealt with if you want. Someone thinking you should kill a convert, not as easily.

Editorial: Rampant fraud is undermining faith in government. Gov. Tim Walz was right to exit.

A little over a year after running on the Democratic Party’s national ticket, Gov. Tim Walz announced Monday he is dropping his bid for reelection as governor of Minnesota, saying the scope of the state’s brazen fraud problems involving its administration of benefit programs demands his full attention as governor.

That was the right decision, and we admire Walz’s choice to hold himself accountable.

While he has not conceded wrongdoing, the unfolding investigations have called into question his administration’s ability to oversee the distribution of federal cash to Minnesotans in need. There was little reason to entrust him with another term after such a massive failure.

The fraud involving the Minnesota nonprofit known as Feeding Our Future (a group that claimed to disburse child nutrition support funds but actually stole most of the cash) has resulted in 78 indictments and 57 convictions so far, costing taxpayers $250 million or more.

That figure is dwarfed by the scale of the Gopher State’s Medicaid fraud scandal. As much as half of the roughly $18 billion in federal funding that supported 14 Minnesota-run programs since 2018 may have been lost to fraud, a federal prosecutor said last month.

These are the types of stories cited by many on the political right as evidence that the nation’s welfare programs are out of control and exorbitant. For those on the political left who typically are far more supportive of social-net spending, Minnesota is a political nightmare and some have circled the wagons in defense. Wiser heads, though, can see that the fraud also robbed funds from those who needed them the most and that rooting out fraud should not be a partisan issue.

The scale of the scandal in Minnesota can’t be dismissed as a few bad apples. It exposes just how fallible big government can get. In this case, the extent of taxpayer waste is unconscionable. “What are we even paying taxes for?” comedian Theo Von posted on X.

This problem, of course, doesn’t end with Walz and Minnesota. Stories of fraudulent acts continue to emerge from other parts of the country, including Ohio and Mississippi. Democrats may be more enthusiastic supporters of Medicaid than Republicans as a general matter, but residents of red states rely on these programs every bit as much as those in blue states. And fraudsters have been running rampant all over the country.

Here in Illinois, the Tribune reported that hundreds of government workers improperly obtained millions in Paycheck Protection Program money. According to the Illinois Office of the Executive Inspector General, more than 200 state employees have been fired or resigned, some face criminal prosecution, and over $2.8 million in taxpayer-funded loans went to workers across multiple agencies. As of June 30, the OEIG had found “reasonable cause” of wrongdoing in 378 cases, concluding that many state employees obtained PPP loans using falsified information.
Chicago Inspector General Deborah Witzburg is also looking into the issue, initially identifying nearly 1,000 potentially improper PPP loans involving city employees. We’re glad to see Witzburg’s focus on this upsetting problem, though we bemoan her publicly saying she was prioritizing cases involving employees of the Chicago Police Department over other city departments and reporting only nine cases (so far), according to Tribune reporting.

Nine is but a tiny percentage of initial 1,000, leading to the impression that many fraudulent city employees are likely to escape scrutiny. Yes, we understand resources are limited, but this problem deserves watchdogs’ full attention and we’d like to know more about the other 991 loans initially identified.

One need only look north to Minnesota, where cops do not seem to have been the problem, to see why. And, frankly, it’s hardly fair for state employees to be subject to greater scrutiny than their civilian counterparts at the city.

PPP abuse isn’t the only problem. In November, Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul charged a physician who allegedly billed Medicaid and Medicare for more than $1 million in services he did not personally provide.

Even before the Minnesota story broke, the Ohio attorney general had been investigating Medicaid abuse cases, indicting multiple providers for alleged fraudulent activity. The good news for Ohioans is that their state has a Medicaid Fraud Control Unit that works with state and federal partners to target fraud, waste and abuse in its health care system. We imagine this unit will have its hands full in the coming months.

As it becomes clear that our massive social safety net is extremely vulnerable to abuse by bad actors, it’s fair to put these systems under a microscope to ensure they’re working as intended. It’s hard to see, after doing that, how spending wouldn’t go down, given how much money has been siphoned off by fraud.

Public trust is hard to build and easy to lose, and the mess in Minnesota that has undermined Walz’s reputation shows what happens when oversight failures are allowed to fester until they explode into scandal. It behooves our elected leaders to beef up oversight operations, and governors must become proactive on this issue.

Instead of waiting for your political opponents to attack, why not get ahead of the story and ferret out waste, fraud and abuse on behalf of your constituents?

Cause my kids went to a daycare in the city and if you were to walk by it, you’d never know there were kids there. If you showed up and asked to see it you wouldn’t be allowed in. Even as a parent, they brought my kid out to me during pickup timeframes.

My wife works at a preschool and they have an outside yard so you’d hear kids, but you’d never see them unless, again, you showed up during specific pickup and drop off windows.

Given that state licensing and numerous media outlets have now had access to the places listed and all but one had children present, I’m waiting for the whole story on this guys editing to come out.

Is there daycare fraud? I’m sure there is. Is it rampant that there are daycares with no children at all? I doubt it. I’d guess it’d be far more likely that they’re employing illegal labor.

Seems odd that unemployed people all take their children to daycare.....especially the ones like the the interview that went viral of the daycare owner with the $3,000 designer glasses who's daycare is only open from 2PM till 10PM.....you know the guy I'm talking about....the one who's daycare was broken into and the only thing stolen was the records of what children are serviced there.

the 2-10 pm operation certainly raised my eyebrow. it struck me as a poor attempt at explaining why they weren't open in the middle of a weekday.

also--setting aside that most all are on welfare to begin with-- if somali women are muslim and in the hijab, and as a general rule don't work outside the home-- why are all of their kids in daycare?

you're going to see a massive stream of people coming and going during drop off and pick up times. this is particularly true in cities where there isn't a lot of space for parents to park - these drop offs even become a political issue in some neighborhoods.

and regardless, youtube guy asked if he could enroll his fictional son in the daycare and the woman answering the door looking at him like he had two heads. even if you go during the day and don't see kids, it's not like being asked about enrollment is some novel question that a person working the door wouldn't know how to answer.

i don't say this to pick on yoyo, but i specifically remember his remarks.

i'd never heard of walz, but saw yoyo celebrating the pick and saying the guy was the best communicator in politics (along with some additional praising).

i later saw an interview of walz and was stunned. how could anyone have mistook him for a good communicator? the only words i could accurately apply to him were "stooge" or "buffoon".

The governor's response has not reassured his critics that he is laser focused on restoring credibility to these programs and mercilessly prosecuting thieves. It is fine to insist, as Walz has, that the entire Somali diaspora not be smeared for the criminal behavior of some community members, but the governor has made a habit of trying to redirect blame to other groups, such as white men. This is unpersuasive, since the accusations against the Somalis are about proportionality, not absolute levels of crime. Moreover, saying that we must be color-blind with respect to the ethnicities of the fraudsters while also calling for more white men to be held accountable is totally incoherent.

Unfortunately, this incoherence is broadly representative of the Walz persona. This is a man who was elevated to national prominence by Vice President Kamala Harris when she picked him to be her 2025 running mate. In Walz's own clumsily-worded telling, she picked him because he could "code talk to white guys" like himself. He saw his job as reassuring his own identity group that they could vote for a black woman for president. It's a reductive and extremely flawed notion of what makes for a relatable presidential ticket; Harris underperformed with men—particularly young men—of all racial backgrounds, not specifically white guys. Walz likes football and fixing trucks, so vote Harris/Walz 2024! This is identity politics at its most vacuous.

But it's not just that Walz's vibes are off. His governance in the state of Minnesota has been disastrous, even apart from the fraud scandal. Indeed, Walz has achieved a record as hostile to human liberty as virtually any other currently seated governor. He was, first and foremost, a COVID-19 tyrant who zealously enforced social distancing and mask requirements, including by setting up a coronavirus snitch hotline: Citizens were encouraged to report their neighbors to the government for failing to abide by COVID-19 rules. He also spent coronavirus relief money on pet projects and political kickbacks that were obviously outside the scope of what the money ought to have been used for: state workers' parking costs, teaching women and minority owned businesses how to apply for state contracts, and the Minneapolis zoo.

For supporters of individual liberty, Walz's various pronouncements on policy issues were like nails on a chalkboard. He said that misinformation was not protected by the First Amendment. (It is.) He said socialism was just "neighborliness." ....
