I was on the phone with a city office today. Just trying to get some old records.

They lady on the phone was very nice. She didn't have access to those files but spent sometime and found a few emails and phone numbers of other people with the city who might.

I thanked her graciously as we were finishing the call. That's when she said "I hope you have a wonder holidays and...wait, I'm going to restate that. I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving and Christmas."

Guess, what? I wasn't fucking offended. I said, "Thank you, I hope you do too."

Can you believe that?

Speaking of covers, Toys in the Attic has "Walk This Way" with its very memorable guitar riff. The joint cover with Run DMC was an inspired collaboration.

The Beatles recorded She Loves You in German. A cover?

Now if the composer had the song recorded by someone else and then did it himself / herself, that's also a cover, although it's often confused. Hey, that's my song! One example might be All Along the Watchtower, so identified with Hendrix. Did people realize at the time it was from Bob Dylan?

...we go record shopping and I'll let her pick out a few albums she enjoys, mostly by younger pop-tarts.

She has to find the section, browse alphabetically, remember if she already has the album or not, etc. I showed her how to start up our receiver and turntable so she doesn't damage it.

My hope is that it's a bonding experience for us that will transcend age and even when she's an angsty teen she'll still want to go record shopping with dad.

Plus, someone has to eventually inherit my collection. It'll likely be her.
